Needs Assessment End Result

October 06, 2013General Musings, PD

In the context of considering the purpose of a needs assessment, I equate conducting a needs assessment of our adult learners to that of conducting a pre-test to a class of students. What we find in the end is that the needs of each individual participant are going to be unique and require different strands of learning to reach proficiency in the areas we are addressing. To this degree, I feel that the most difficult issue with a needs assessment isn’t in the needs assessment itself, but properly addressing those needs once the data has been collected. With this in mind, though, constructing a needs assessment that touches on all of these perceived needs thoroughly and objectively is also an exercise that requires critical thinking and a little bit of homework. Not an easy task.
