Change the Use of ‘Change’

When it comes to faculty development, the word ‘change’ can be a scary one. It often lends itself to staff and faculty feeling as if what they are doing is wrong or outdated, and because of that it often comes with hesitation or resistance. For this reason I disagree with the use of the word by way of faculty development. More than often, it is not the teacher that needs to change, it is the process. However, I also believe that in growing as a professional and educator, there are certain things about you that will indeed change.

So, with that in mind, although change does naturally occur in the process of development, perhaps we substitute the word ‘change’ with something along the lines of ‘transform’ or ‘modify’. Somehow those don’t seem as scary.
