Setting goals within a district sets the tone for what an organization hopes to accomplish and creates a precedent to compare current performance from it’s staff. Without goals and a common vision, an organization as a whole has nothing to work towards and in effect functions as individual members and not as an entity.
Our district currently has goals in place across the board. Teachers set their own achievement goals that align to their evaluation, as well as student performance through student learning objectives. Principals establish building goals that guide staff members to reach benchmarks within their distinct student population, and our district as a whole has established goals that relate to the state report card. Although goals may not always be agreed upon by all members of a participating organization, they do establish a level of achievement to strive for and a criteria to measure individual staff performance, and an evaluation criteria for the staff as a whole.
